The legend of Devin Cooley grows after Flames goalie reveals bizarre new hobby
Calgary Flames goaltender Devin Cooley hasn’t let NHL success alter his quirky and fun-loving personality.
The 29-year-old quickly became a fan favourite in Calgary as a rookie last season, thanks to the hilarious soundbites he gave each and every time he was interviewed.
It’s not just the fan base that loves him, either, as several of his Flames teammates have talked about how awesome it is to have him in the dressing room. A large part of that is due to his authenticity, which was recently on full display in a video his fiance, Natalie Weyers, uploaded to Instagram.
Earlier in the week, Weyers revealed that Cooley had chosen to try a new hobby. Rather than something like fishing or cooking, he was instead studying algebra. He even bought a book to help him out.
“What is he doing for fun right now? Linear algebra,” Weyers said while walking into the office Cooley was in. “He bought a textbook for linear algebra and is doing it for fun.”

While the majority of fans found it incredible that an NHL player would put his focus into such an unusual task, Cooley still felt the need to explain the situation in the comment section on Instagram.
“The goal is to see how far I can go in math before my brain says that’s enough,” Cooley wrote. “I dropped out of studying finance and computer science in college to play hockey, and linear algebra is where I left off, so that’s where I’ll start.
“Why am I doing this? I’m not really sure, but I guess with how good AI is getting, I don’t want to lose the art of learning and creating. Plus, it’s a fun challenge!”
Unfortunately for Cooley, his newfound passion for linear algebra will soon have to take a backseat, with Flames training camp set to get underway next week.
