JUNOfest Calgary: 6 rock events to check out

Over 100 local and national musicians will be playing at venues around Calgary for JUNOfest this weekend. There are $30 wristbands available to get access into all JUNOfest venues over both nights, Friday and Saturday (subject to venue capacity), or you can buy tickets to individual shows.

To make things a bit easier for you, we’ve complied a list of six rock events to check out.

Derrival

  • Who: Vancouver-based Indie-Rock band, they combine synth-heavy elements with guitar driven hooks and melodies. Formed in 2009 by combining high-school bands they have since undergone University programs to develop the skillsets of a record label for releasing their own music.
  • Where: Palamino Smokehouse and Social Club – 109 7th Avenue SW
  • When: Friday, April 1. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Derrival on at 10:30 p.m.
  • Cost: $20

Diemonds

  • Who: A female fronted Canadian hard rock band from Toronto. They take lyrics that speak to the outcasts, wild childs, and misfits.
  • Where: Dickens Pub – 1000 9 Avenue SW
  • When: Saturday, April 2 at 9 p.m. Diemonds on at 10 p.m.
  • Cost: $20

Hi-Strung Downers

  • Who: A four-piece greasy rock and roll band. Influenced by rockabilly, early rock and roll, punk rock and roots music.
  • Where: Wine-Ohs – 811 1 Street SW
  • When: Saturday, April 2. Show starts at 9 p.m. Hi-Strung Downers on at 1 a.m.
  • Cost: $15

KEN mode

  • Who: KEN mode or Kill Everyone Now mode, is a Winnipeg based band that was formed in 1999. They are a JUNO award winning independent indie rock/metal/hardcore band.
  • Where: Dickens Pub – 1000 9 Avenue SW
  • When: Saturday, April 2 at 9 p.m. KEN mode on at 11 p.m.
  • Cost: $20

Marianas Trench

  • Who: A rock band from Vancouver who got together in 2001. JUNO Award winners in 2013, they have released four full length studio albums over their career.
  • Where: Stampede Corral – 555 Saddledome Rise SE
  • When: Saturday, April 2 at 7 p.m.
  • Cost: $45 – $280

The Electric Revival

  • Who: The rock trio from Calgary formed in late 2009 and began playing local gigs. Since then they have released a full length album, increased their fan base and played a North American tour.
  • Where: Palamino Smokehouse and Social Club – 109 7th Avenue SW
  • When: Saturday, April 2. Show starts at 7:45 p.m. The Electric Revival on at midnight.
  • Cost: $20
