JUNOfest Calgary: 9 country music events to check out

Over 100 local and national musicians will be playing at venues around Calgary for JUNOfest this weekend. There are $30 wristbands available to get access into all JUNOfest venues over both nights, Friday and Saturday (subject to venue capacity), or you can buy tickets to individual shows.

To make things a bit easier for you, we’ve complied a list of nine country music events to check out.

Armond Duck Chief

  • Who: This year’s JUNO Award nominee, Armond Duck Chief is performing in the JUNOFest Indigenous Showcase.
  • Where: Grey Eagle Casino – 3777 Grey Eagle Drive
  • When: Thursday, March 31. Show starts at 8 p.m.
  • Cost: $29.50 and above

Autumn Hill

  • Who: Canadian country music duo Mike Robins and Tareya Green. The Toronto and Calgary natives respectively, had their debut single, “Anything At All,” entered the Canadian Hot 100 in January 2013.
  • Where: Ranchman’s – 9615 MacLeaod Trail SW
  • When: Saturday, April 2. Show starts at 8:00 p.m. Autum Hill on at 11 p.m.
  • Cost: $15

Drew Gregory

  • Who: From small town Standard, Alberta, Drew now lives in Nashville pursuing his country music career. He won the 2015 ACMA for male artist of the year.
  • Where: Ranchman’s – 9615 MacLeaod Trail SW
  • When: Friday, April 1. Show starts at 8 p.m. Drew Gregory on at 9 p.m.
  • Cost: $15

Hey Romeo

  • Who: This country music trio started their careers in Edmonton, Alberta dropping their first single in 2007. Stacey, Darren and Rob won best new talent of the year for group or duo in 2008 at the ACMA awards.
  • Where: Ranchman’s – 9615 MacLeaod Trail SW
  • When: Friday, April 1. Show starts at 8 p.m. Hey Romeo on at 11 p.m.
  • Cost: $15

Jason Hastie and the Alibi

  • Who: Jason, Ray, and Joel might arguably be one of the most talked about new arrivals on the Canadian country music scene. They’ve performed at the CMA Music Festival in Nashville, the Calgary Stampede and a sold-out CD Release event in their hometown of Calgary.
  • Where: Ranchman’s – 9615 MacLeaod Trail SW
  • When: Saturday, April 2. Show starts at 8 p.m. Jason Hastie and the Alibi on at 9 p.m.
  • Cost: $15

Jim Cuddy

  • Who: Toronto born singer-songwriter who is primarily associated with the band Blue Rodeo will be playing at this years Outliers and Gunslingers event.
  • Where: Royal Canadian Legion #1 – 116 7 Avenue SE
  • When: Friday, April 1 at 8 p.m.
  • Cost: $20

Maddison Krebs

  • Who: Described as a classic country soulstress, Maddison is a singer songwriter from Okotoks, Alberta. At 15 she released her first EP and now at 18 she just released her second one.
  • Where: Ranchman’s – 9615 MacLeaod Trail SW
  • When: Friday, April 1. Show starts at 8 p.m.
  • Cost: $15

NQ Arbuckle

  • Who: Two time JUNO Award nominees, they are an alternative country band who formed in 2002. Neville, John, Mark, Peter, and Jason were JUNO Award nominees in 2008 and 2009 for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year – Group.
  • Where: Royal Canadian Legion #1 – 116 7 Avenue SE
  • When: Friday, April 1 at 8 p.m.
  • Cost: $20

TwoShine County

  • Who: Daron and Dennis are the country duo known as TwoShine Country. They formed their group in 2014 and just released their debut EP entitled “Whole Lotta Love” at the end of 2015.
  • Where: Ranchman’s – 9615 MacLeaod Trail SW
  • When: Saturday, April 2. Show starts at 8 p.m.
