Cockroach infestation shutters downtown Calgary restaurant; has since reopened

A popular Calgary restaurant was forced to close after Alberta Health Services (AHS) discovered a cockroach infestation, but it has since reopened.
During an inspection on Jan. 29, 2026, Japanese Village, located at 317 10th Ave. SW was ordered to shut down after inspectors found evidence of a cockroach infestation as well as several other health and safety violations.
“Evidence of a cockroach infestation was observed in the facility. Pest control monitoring glue boards in the facility contained an abundance of cockroaches in all cycles of life,” the AHS report states.

In addition to the infestation, AHS says it identified multiple other health and safety violations. The mechanical dishwasher was not sanitizing dishes, grease and food debris were found on surfaces, equipment, and throughout the kitchen, food was being directly stored on the floor, and more.
The report also states that staff were reportedly attempting to treat the cockroach infestation themselves using pesticides, which is against safety guidelines. The facility also lacked proper food handler certification for employees on-site.
“Greater than five food handlers were working on the premise, and nobody on site had a valid certificate issued by the Minister confirming successful completion of a food sanitation and hygiene training program…”
AHS and Japanese Village confirmed to Daily Hive that a follow-up inspection was completed on the morning of Feb. 5, 2026, and the closure order was lifted, allowing the restaurant to reopen.
