3 interior designer-approved ways to bring affordable luxury into your home

Feb 9 2018, 7:33 am

How many times have you flicked through pages of your favourite lifestyle magazine only to feel annoyed that your place doesn’t look anything like the featured homes? It happens.

Instead, you can take inspiration to create your own version of a designer look – for less. All you need is some good advice and the best person to listen to is interior designer, author, and star of HGTV Canada’s Home to Win: Tiffany Pratt.

The talented maker wrote the DIY guide This Can Be Beautiful, so you know she’s going to give you solid advice. She knows exactly how to fearlessly design a space that exudes affordable luxury, boldly mixing high and low home decor.

Tiffany shared her three must-know tips with Daily Hive, and now we’re sharing them with you. Enjoy!

Old walls? Expensive paint!

Good quality paint can go a long way to making old walls look fresh and modern. An extra $20 to $30 a gallon can make a world of difference. If you’re trying to hide damaged or uneven walls, try a thick paintable wallpaper like Anaglypta. Find out more here.

Upgrade with art

Art is an investment. Nothing elevates a space like a beautiful painting by a local artist. It doesn’t need to be expensive, it just needs to be authentic and speak to your style.

Invest in the focal point

Every designer will tell you that focal point can make or break a room so spend your money where it counts. Invest in the focal point. In Tiffany’s apartment, the stunning fireplace and large built-in desk/organization unit are the focal points. You could also use rugs, lighting, or art as a focal point. Wherever your eye is drawn first and most is where you should consider a ‘high’ element.
