The Canadian men’s national team has participated in just three FIFA World Cup tournaments, but they’ve got a great chance to qualify for a fourth in 2030.
Canada didn’t score a goal at the 1986 World Cup, and didn’t win a game in 2022. That changed in 2026, with Canada posting a 2-2-1 record and making it to the Round of 16.
The 2030 FIFA World Cup is being co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco June 13 to July 21, with centenary celebration matches taking place in Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina June 8 and 9.
Six teams from the Concacaf region will earn automatic berths into the 48-team FIFA World Cup in 2030. A seventh team could also earn a spot via the intercontinental playoff. World Cup qualifying begins in September 2027.

The road to the 2030 FIFA World Cup (Concacaf)
Concacaf World Cup qualifying (Round 1)
Based on its FIFA ranking, Canada will likely earn a bye to the second round of qualifying in Concacaf.
The first round of qualifying includes Concacaf member associations ranked 14-35. Canada is currently ranked third in the region.
Concacaf World Cup qualifying (Round 2)
Beginning in September or October 2027, 24 teams will be divided into six groups of four. Matches will also be played in November 2027 and March 2028.
Each team will play six matches (three home and three away), with the top-two ranked teams in each group moving on to the final round of qualifying.
Canada will be a heavy favourite to move on beyond this round as well.
Concacaf World Cup qualifying (Final round)
The last remaining 12 teams will be divided into three groups of four. Similar to the second round, each team will play six matches (three at home and three away). The top two countries in each group will qualify for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The two best third-place teams will advance to the Concacaf play-in. The winner of that home-and-away aggregate score series in November 2029 will advance to the FIFA intercontinental playoff, for a chance to earn a spot in the 2030 World Cup.
This part is less of a guarantee for Canada. While they’re ranked third in the region, the top-ranked teams aren’t always the ones that qualify. Just ask Italy about that fact.
