Alphonso Davies shares heartfelt message after Canada's FIFA World Cup dream ends

It was far from an ideal FIFA World Cup for Alphonso Davies.

The Canadian soccer superstar was held to just 15 minutes of total playtime throughout the 2026 World Cup due to a nagging hamstring injury. Davies’ only appearance came at the tail-end of Canada’s 1-0 victory over South Africa in the Round of 32.

His injury was a major roadblock for the Canadian men, as Davies is a premier player for this team and serves as the captain of the national team. Despite Canada having their best-ever showing in World Cup history, not having Davies available for most of the tournament was vastly disappointing.

The 25-year-old shared in that disappointment, posting a heartfelt note to social media following Canada’s elimination in the Round of 16 to Morocco.

“Personally, this tournament was one of the toughest challenges of my career,” Davies wrote. “After suffering a hamstring injury, I wasn’t able to perform at the level I know I’m capable of. It hurts knowing I couldn’t give my all when my team and my country needed it most.

“That said, I don’t believe in excuses. Football is full of setbacks, and how you respond is what defines you. This disappointment will only motivate me to recover, work harder, and come back stronger than ever.”

There was widespread confusion among Canadian fans when Davies didn’t take to the pitch in their Round of 16 match against Morocco. After making his tournament debut in the Round of 32, it was widely expected that Davies would once again suit up to help Canada in their biggest moment.

It was revealed after the loss that the Canadian superstar didn’t feel quite right in the days leading up to the match, and the team decided it wasn’t worth risking Davies’ long-term health.

Some fans took issue with Davies remaining on the bench, but the decision was out of his hands at that point. Even with the setback, the Canadian captain seemed dead-set on re-focusing on the national team’s future.

“To everyone who supported us through every moment, thank you. Your belief and support never goes unnoticed,” Davies wrote. “We’ll learn from this, we’ll grow, and we’ll be back.”

Though things didn’t go quite as planned for Davies or the Canadian men, this tournament still accomplished a lot for the country. Nobody expected Canada to go this far in the World Cup, and just getting into the top-16 was a huge accomplishment on its own.

They managed to last longer than established soccer superpowers like Germany and the Netherlands, and got as far as Brazil.

It’ll be a long journey to get to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, but when it arrives, the hope is that Canada will have a healthy Davies leading the way.
