One of the most beloved hiking trails in the Alberta Rockies reopens this weekend

Lace up your hiking boots, because one of the most beloved trails in the Alberta Rockies is set to reopen this weekend after being closed since 2024.

The Valley of the Five Lakes trail in Jasper National Park has been closed since the 2024 wildfire that roared through the park, but after plenty of restoration work, the trail is now stronger, safer, and more scenic than ever.

Upgrades to the trail include new vistas from a realigned ridgeline trail, a short loop above the first lake, better signage to help visitors choose their adventure, smoother trails, new benches and picnic tables and a stone staircase that has been hand-placed, crafted by an expert, and designed to last.

The trail officially reopens on Saturday, May 23, with a celebration being held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with Parks Canada staff and Friends of Jasper volunteers hosting optional engagement stations along the trail.

Visitors are welcome to stop at the stations, ask questions and take part in activities. There will also be drumming performances by Indigenous partners at 10 a.m. and noon, art activities, friendly roving interpreters for fun activities on the trail, and themed snacks.
