An overnight washout on the Trans Canada Highway just west of Revelstoke in southeastern BC has forced the closure of the route for at least two days while crews conduct extensive repairs.

The flood occurred when the river overflowed and sent metres of debris and mud onto the roadway and bridge. According to the Ministry of Transportation, Highway 1 in both directions 25 km west of Revelstoke to Sicamous is closed until further notice.

Drivers are being diverted to Highway 23 south of Revelstoke, across the Arrow Lake ferry, which leads to Highway 6.

Expect major delays throughout the weekend on the alternative routes in the BC interior due to the closure.
