One injured after grizzly bear attack along southern Alberta river

An angler is expected to recover after a grizzly bear attacked them on a river in southwestern Alberta over the weekend.
Alberta’s forestry and parks minister, Todd Loewen, shared on his Facebook page Tuesday that the bear mauled an angler south of Cardston along the St. Mary River in southwestern Alberta.
“Details are still being gathered, but at this time, we understand the angler will recover,” Loewen’s post stated, adding that officers have been to the scene and there has been no sighting of the grizzly since the attack.
It was also reported that young bears were with the adult grizzly that attacked, and it appeared to be a defensive attack.
“The situation will continue to be monitored. As always, be careful when in bear country,” the post added.
All provincial parks and protected areas within Kananaskis Country and the Bow Valley have been under a bear warning since Aug. 12 due to an exceptional berry crop, according to Alberta Parks.
Kananaskis has seen an increase in bear sightings in day-use areas, campgrounds, trails, and along roadways. There has also been an increase in reported close encounters with both black bears and grizzly bears.
