The Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research raises more than $265K

It’s been impossible to miss news of The Tragically Hip’s final concert tour this summer.

And, if you were like one third of Canadians, you tuned into their last concert in Kingston, ON on Saturday night.

You probably also know that this farewell tour has come about because lead singer Gord Downie has been diagnosed with glioblastoma – an aggressive type of brain tumour. But what you might not know is that he started a fund for brain cancer research at Sunnybrook Hospital, appropriately called the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research.

And, after the absolutely amazing concert on Saturday night, more than $265 thousand has already been donated to the fund.

In a news release from Sunnybrook, the hospital announced that as of yesterday morning the fund had already raised $265 thousand. And, given another 24hrs to grow, we can only imagine where it sits now – hopefully tens, if not hundreds, of thousands higher.

Not only has Sunnybrook “heard from several corporations who have expressed their interest in supporting the fund,” but they have also “heard from Canadians across the country, in the United States and around the world who organized events to watch the show and collect donations.”
