5 FREE holiday events happening at this Calgary mall

Dec 5 2019, 12:01 pm

Winter in Calgary is getting progressively colder, just as we expected. But there’s no time to sit around and complain when we have plenty of opportunities to embrace the festivities — indoors.

We’re not talking about sitting on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate in-hand as you watch Elf on repeat (although we fully support that), because there’s so much happening beyond your doorstep at New Horizon Mall.

The retail destination is the ideal place to spend a snowy afternoon in Calgary discovering new food, shopping for holiday gifts, and taking in all the free events happening this season. Did we mention that the mall has heated indoor parking, too?

Here’s a look at what you can expect.

East Balzac Christmas Craft Market

Christmas songs and handmade crafts are among our favourite things about the holidays. On Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8 you can head to New Horizon Mall to enjoy the vibrant East Balzac Craft Market, browse the craft vendor stalls and check out free entertainment. Who knows, you might even find all of your holiday gifts while you’re there, and that calls for a celebration.

Rocky Mountain Jazz and the Crossfield Baptist Church Choir will be performing on December 7, followed by a holiday fashion show featuring trends for the winter season. The next day, on December 8, bring the kids along for a horse-drawn wagon ride and to see Santa. The little ones will also get to take a digital photo with Mr. Claus for free before he heads back to the North Pole!

Holiday Skate Pop-up Roller Rink

Ice skating isn’t the only ridiculously fun activity you can do this season — there’s also roller skating. On Saturday, December 7, New Horizon Mall is teaming up with Calgary Roller Skate and Alien In-Line for an afternoon of skating coupled with music that will make you want to m-o-v-e.

Skating will be taking place on a 10,000 sq. ft. pop-up rink from 12 to 4 pm, and admission is free. All you have to do is bring your own skates or simply pay $10 for rentals. On the day, donations will be accepted for the Airdrie Food Bank and, in exchange, you’ll get some awesome free stickers.

Pet Christmas Costume Contest

Can you think of anything more adorable than pets dressed up in Christmas costumes? We didn’t think so. On Sunday, December 8, New Horizon Mall is partnering with ARTS Senior Animal Rescue for a Pet Christmas Costume Contest that’s sure to make you feel warm and fuzzy.

From 10:30 to 12:30 pm, bring your furry friend along to enter the contest and get some free photos with Santa! Make sure to register at the door, where all proceeds will be donated to ARTS.

Kids Christmas Party

Help the kids get even more excited about Santa’s arrival at the Christmas party happening on Saturday, December 14, from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. Occasional Notes Candy Cane Kids Performance Group will be bringing the festive fun for an afternoon of free entertainment with singing, dancing, and Christmas games for the little ones to enjoy.

Last-minute shoppers, this is also a great day to pick up gift wrapping paper and the little things we all tend to leave until the last moment.
