It appears that Daniil Miromanov’s playing career in North America has come to an end.
The now former Calgary Flames defenceman, who spent the vast majority of the 2025-26 campaign in the AHL, is heading back to Europe to continue his career with SKA Saint Petersburg of the KHL, per Sport-Expressā Artur Khairullin.
Miromanov was acquired by the Flames at the 2024 trade deadline, coming over as part of the package received from the Vegas Golden Knights in the Noah Hanifin trade. Though his NHL experience was limited at the time, he’d shown great offensive upside during his time in the AHL with the Henderson Silver Knights.
Miromanov was quite confident after being acquired, describing his potential as “limitless” while stating that he believed he would soon be regarded as one of the best defencemen in the NHL. Unfortunately, that bold claim never came to fruition.
The 28-year-old struggled immensely in his first full season with the Flames in 2024-25, suiting up for just 44 of 82 games while averaging less than 18 minutes in ice time. His expected offensive production simply wasn’t there with only nine points, and his defensive struggles made it difficult for head coach Ryan Huska to trust him.
Though Miromanov was able to crack the Flames roster out of training camp this past season, he logged just one game before being placed on waivers and re-assigned to the Calgary Wranglers shortly afterward.
While the Flames brass clearly saw potential in Miromanov’s game at the time they traded for him, things simply didn’t pan out. As a result, he’s headed back overseas and may very well be done playing professional hockey in North America.
