The Calgary Flames have a new goalie.

Owen Say, a star netminder with the University of Notre Dame, has signed with the Flames as a college free agent. The 23-year-old from London, Ont., signed a one-year, two-way contract worth $872,500 that kicks in next season.

“Extremely excited to announce that I’ve signed my first NHL contract with the [Calgary Flames],” Say said in an Instagram post.

“I can’t thank everyone enough that has helped me get to this point in my career ranging from my friends and family, my past teams, teammates and coaches, and most recently all of my teammates, coaches and staff at Notre Dame. I’m forever grateful and truly blessed to have such amazing people in my life. With that being said, I’m super excited for what’s in store!”

Say posted the third-best save percentage (.920) in the Big Ten last season, backstopping a last-place Notre Dame team in 27 games. With Say in net, Notre Dame had a 10-15-0 record. Without him, they were 2-10-1.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound goalie made the move to Notre Dame last season after two years with Mercyhurst College. Say played two seasons of junior hockey with the BCHL’s Salmon Arm Silverbacks before going the college route.

It remains to be seen where Say will play next season, though it would seem likely that he’ll compete for an AHL job with the Calgary Wranglers.
