Calgary Flames' Huberdeau on pace to score most goals in a season since his junior days

As he has on plenty of occasions this season, Jonathan Huberdeau came up huge in the Calgary Flames’ 5-3 win over the New Jersey Devils last night.

The Flames were able to overcome two separate two-goal deficits in the win thanks to a four-goal effort in the third period. Connor Zary was able to cut the deficit in half before Daniil Miromanov got things tied with less than five minutes to play. Just one minute later, it was Huberdeau scoring what wound up being the game-winner.

That goal continued what has been a welcomed and much-needed bounce back for Huberdeau. The 31-year-old struggled immensely in his first two seasons with the Flames, scoring a combined 27 goals in that span. He already sits with a team-leading 26 through 68 games in 2024-25 and has a shot to reach a new career high.

Huberdeau has hit the 30-goal mark twice in his career, once in 2018-19 and the other in 2021-22, both as a member of the Florida Panthers. He’s currently on pace to score 31.

Should he score north of 30, it will mark his first time doing so since the 2010-11 season as a member of the Saint John Sea Dogs.

“Our goal is to make the playoffs,” said Huberdeau, who is never one to talk about himself. “We need as many points as we can [get]. This kind of game is fun, when you come back in a game that’s always the fun part. I thought the way we did it was pretty cool.”

Last night’s win was huge for the Flames, as a regulation loss would have resulted in them falling four points behind the St. Louis Blues for a wild-card spot. Instead, they remain just two back with a game in hand.

While they still have a tough road ahead, this Flames team continues to show they are a resilient group. Huberdeau is a player they are going to need to be at his best if they have any shot at the playoffs, and based on how he’s looked all season long, there shouldn’t be much doubt that he can keep things rolling.
