The Calgary Flames are getting a bit of business done before the Olympic roster freeze kicks in later this week.
GM Craig Conroy already made the big move in shipping Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights last month, but that wasn’t the only move left to make. The Dallas Stars announced on Monday afternoon that they had acquired defenceman Jeremie Poirier from the Flames in exchange for defenceman Gavin White.

Poirier is a former third-round pick of the Flames back in 2020 who has spent the entirety of his professional career with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers. He had just one goal and six points through 35 AHL games this season.
At one point, the 23-year-old did show some promise as an offensive defender, notching 42 points in 72 AHL games last season, but he has since fallen way down Calgary’s depth chart.
Writing was on the wall for Jeremie Poirier for some time. Offensive-minded defenceman who fell way down the depth chart. #Flames

The Flames will now see if White can give them a bit more at the AHL level. The 23-year-old defender is a former 2022 fourth-round pick of the Stars who has yet to make his NHL debut. He flip-flopped between the AHL and ECHL last season, but seems to have found his footing as a regular AHL defender this season.
He does not have the offensive chops that Poirier has, having scored a total of 27 points over the course of 118 career AHL games.
As the Flames are almost certain to be a lottery team this season, it will be interesting if they give White a chance to get some NHL games under his belt, or if they’d rather keep him in the AHL with the Wranglers.
