Calgary Flames lose Walker Duehr to another team, get nothing in return

Walker Duehr is no longer a member of the Calgary Flames.

The 27-year-old, who has suited up for 16 games with the Flames this season, was placed on waivers yesterday afternoon. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman has reported that the winger was claimed by the San Jose Sharks.

Duehr had been a member of the Flames since signing as an undrafted free agent following four seasons with Minnesota State University. He was able to make his NHL debut the very next season, suiting up for one game with the Flames in 2021-22, while spending the rest of his time in the AHL with the Stockton Heat.

Duehr began the following season with the Calgary Wranglers, but was called up after 41 games and remained with the Flames for the remainder of the campaign. He had his breakout to close that season, registering seven goals and 11 points while providing a much-needed physical presence on the fourth line. The 6-foot-2 winger impressed the Flames brass enough during that stretch to earn a two-year extension.

The 2023-24 season proved to be a more difficult one for Duehr. While he was able to crack the Flames roster out of training camp, he struggled to earn regular minutes under a new head coach in Ryan Huska, and ended up finding himself back in the AHL.

This season saw Duehr begin with the Wranglers, though he was recalled in early December after scoring 11 goals in just 20 games. He failed to muster up any of that offence in his most recent call up, however, registering just one assist.

This claim should present Duehr with a solid opportunity, as the Sharks are in a rebuilding stage and will likely give him some time to prove himself as an NHL regular. They currently sit dead last in the NHL standings with a 14-30-6 record.
