12 Fall food events worth checking out in Calgary

Get ready for another season of festive food, drinks, and shenanigans.

YYC Pizza Week

Over 50 locations are participating in this year’s YYC Pizza Week. Restaurants have whipped up unique creations that fall within these four categories: Thick, Thin, Gluton Free, and Unique (there was mention of muffins, desserts, and even drinks in this one). A portion of all proceeds will go towards 100 Men Calgary  and Calgary Meals on Wheels, so use your pizza-eating skills for good this week!

Calgary Oktoberfest

It’s officially lederhosen season because Calgary Oktoberfest is back for another year with all of your Bavarian favourites. Featuring local craft and Bavarian breweries, this celebration of local beer and food will also include bites from some of Calgary’s top restaurants, games, traditional dancers, and authentic Oktoberfest music from the German Knights Band. Tickets are available online and at the door.

When: Friday, September 23 from 4pm-10pm, Saturday, September 24 2pm-9pm

Price: $30 per person for a weekend pass; $19 per person for a day pass (Friday/Saturday)

Preserve the Harvest

What could possibly be more seasonal than fall preserving? Learn the fundamental skills of canning and preserving, but with a modern twist. A fresh update of traditional recipes will be provided and you’ll definitely be happy when you get to take home your bounty. At $70 per person, each ticket includes food and supplies, so get canning!

Hair Of The Dog Oktoberfest Brunch

Combining two of our favourite activities, this event takes boozy brunch to a whole new level. National on 17th will be hosting this much-needed Sunday hangover cure where there will be a special brunch menu and $12 flights with a selection of Alberta beers.

Thanksgiving Pie Bake-Off

The Calgary Farmers’ Market presents the fierce competition that is the 4th Annual Thanksgiving Pie Bake-Off. This year’s entries include Maple Pumpkin, Coconut Cream, Blueberry Rhubarb, Caramel Pumpkin, and Wild Turkey Bourbon Chocolate Pecan. To sample each of the five potential-winning pastries, contribute a cash donation that will go to the Calgary Food Bank, ensuring that all Calgarians have food on their plates this Thanksgiving.

When: Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8 from 11am to 2pm

The 19th Annual Wine & Food Festival will include the latest in beverage products such as wines from around the world, premium spirits, blended and single malt scotches, ports, specialty liquors, as well as import and micro-brewed beers. Chef to Be

In this exciting blackbox competition head chefs from six top Calgary restaurants team up with pupils to raise money for a $5,00 SAIT Culinary Scholarship. Ten carefully chosen ingredients are presented to teams and then it’s up to them prepare a meal for an audience of 130 people in only four hours – talk about pressure. Come watch foodies duel it out on October 27 and see who will be named Chef to Be.

Calgary’s Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown

Some of YYC’s top chefs are gearing up for an epic showdown that will determine who will be named the 2016 Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown Champion. In this thrilling competition you’ll get the chance to taste the chowders, along with some beer, and all for a great cause – to raise awareness for the sustainable seafood movement.
