Emergency test alert for Alberta cancelled due to raging wildfires

May 7 2025, 3:54 pm

An emergency alert test scheduled to ring out across Alberta on Wednesday afternoon has been cancelled due to ongoing wildfires in the province.

Alert Ready, which was created to deliver “critical and potentially life-saving alerts to Canadians through television, radio, and LTE-connected and compatible wireless devices,” says it cancelled its test that was set for 1:55 p.m. local time.

Numerous evacuation orders are in place for areas northeast of Edmonton due to growing wildfires, including the Village of Boyle and rural areas in Sturgeon County.

You can view all current alerts on the Alberta Emergency Alert website.

The alert would have tested the system’s functionality, and Albertans would have been notified that it’s only a test. The alert would warn individuals that they won’t need to take any further steps. However, they may be asked to acknowledge that they received the emergency alert before they can use their mobile device again.

The test would have been distributed on TV, radio, and wireless. It’s also used as an opportunity to check people’s phone compatibility with the alert system.

The alert will still go on as scheduled for the rest of Canada.
