Edmonton Oilers interested in signing former Flames winger

A former Calgary Flames winger is reportedly drawing the interest of the Edmonton Oilers heading into free agency.

The Oilers were able to free up some much-needed cap space on Wednesday by trading Evander Kane to the Vancouver Canucks. That said, they still don’t have a ton of room to work with and will need to round out their roster with some cost-efficient options. Based on a recent report, one player they are considering to help with just that is Andrew Mangiapane.

Mangiapane, who spent the first six seasons of his NHL career in a Flames sweater, is coming off a three-year contract that carried a cap hit of $5.8 million. He signed that deal shortly after a career-high 35-goal, 55-point season, and his numbers have taken a hit since.

The 29-year-old hasn’t hit the 20-goal mark in the past three seasons and managed just 28 points in 81 games in 2024-25 as a member of the Washington Capitals. That said, his strong two-way play makes him a versatile option who can play up and down the lineup, and, based on his stats as of late, won’t command much money in free agency.

“There seems to be a lot of teams that have [Mangiapane] on their radar,” David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period recently said. “We already reported that Toronto is one of the teams that he’s looking at. I would add Seattle to that mix, Boston, the Edmonton Oilers, and a few others that are going to pursue Andrew Mangiapane.”

Whether the Oilers ultimately land Mangiapane remains to be seen, but it gives an idea as to what types of players they will be targeting in free agency. It’s also worth noting that they are expected to move Viktor Arvidsson in the near future, which will give them even more money to spend as they look to improve their roster following a second-straight loss in the Stanley Cup Final.
