Dustin Wolf gave both a candid and rather humorous interview after a much-needed bounce-back performance for the Calgary Flames on Thursday night.
It’s been a bit of a strange week for Wolf, who, after giving up three goals on four shots in his latest start versus the Tampa Bay Wolf, saw Devin Cooley get the nod in each of the past three Flames games. He returned to the crease versus the Minnesota Wild and looked much more like the goalie who received a $52.5-million contract in the summer.
“You can’t let anything bother you about that. Sh*t happens,” Wolf said on his recent stretch. “That’s the game of hockey. You can’t change what’s happened, you can only look forward to the next opportunity.”
Wolf was incredible all night long, kicking aside 26 of the 27 shots he faced, several of which were highlight-reel worthy. He even seemed surprised at one ridiculous save he made on Marcus Johansson in the second period.

“I thought I was sh*t out of luck when he made the first pass,” Wolf said. “Got some bounces tonight. It hit me, and [Nazem Kadri] made a nice play with his stick to keep it out of there. That’s hockey. Sometimes bounces go your way, sometimes they don’t. Thankfully, we got a couple to go our way tonight.”
While it was an impressive performance, it wasn’t one that had many surprised. Head coach Ryan Huska was quick to praise his young goaltender, stating that his competitiveness is what allows him to shake off tough outings as quickly and often as he does.
“It shows the competitive side to the player. He’s always that way,” Huska said. “I think this time on the road gave him the opportunity to actually dial some parts of his game in a little bit with Jason [LaBarbera]. I think he did a very good job of that.”
It wasn’t just Wolf who had a much-needed big performance in this one, either. Jonathan Huberdeau entered the contest stuck in a 14-game goal drought, but changed that by opening up the scoring in the second period.

“I’ve been grinding away, but that one felt good for sure,” Huberdeau said. “Hopefully that can get me going and [I] can find the back of the net a bit more often.”
With the win, the Flames improved their record to 10-15-4 on the season and have pulled ahead of the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL standings. They’ll look to make it two in a row on Saturday in an outing versus the Utah Mammoth.
