Steal of the 2025 draft? Calgary Flames have prospect tearing up NCAA

The Calgary Flames have yet another prospect that fans are going to want to start keeping an eye on.

The Flames have done a superb job of drafting under GM Craig Conroy, grabbing some great young talent, including the likes of Zayne Parekh, Matvei Gridin, Cole Reschny, Cullen Potter, and Henry Mews. While the five mentioned all have promising futures ahead, it’s a fifth-round pick from the 2025 draft that is really starting to turn some heads.

Ethan Wyttenbach was selected 144th overall by the Flames last June after a solid 24 goals and 51 points in 44 games with the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede. While viewed as a skilled offensive talent, he was undersized heading into his draft, listed at just 5-foot-9, 180 pounds.

While his selection didn’t create a lot of buzz at the time, Wyttenbach is quickly becoming a prospect that every other team in the NHL is regretting not taking a chance on much earlier.

After his lone season in the USHL, Wyttenbach joined Quinnipiac University for the 2025-26 season and is quickly making a name for himself.

Through just 16 games of his freshman season, Wyttenbach has scored eight goals while adding 14 helpers. His 22 points lead Quinnipiac, while his eight goals are third. He’s also tied for seventh amongst all college players in points, while leading the way for all freshmen.

Just days ago, the 18-year-old was named ECAC’s Hockey’s Rookie of the Week.

“The freshman forward was +2 this past holiday week, making his mark,” an excerpt on ECAC’s website reads. “Wednesday afternoon, Wyttenbach took advantage of two power plays and assisted his teammates to find the back of the net. He also posted two goals in the Bobcats’ 7-6 overtime win against Holy Cross. Saturday night, Wyttenbach posted two assists against Stonehill for a 3-2 win.”

A concern for a player like Wyttenbach being drafted into the Flames organization is the surplus of wingers they have in their prospect pipeline. Others who have yet to make their mark in the NHL include Jacob Battaglia, William Stromgren, Aydar Suniev, and Andrew Basha.

While the prospect depth on the wings is very deep for the Flames, that may not be an issue for Wyttenbach. Not only is he currently keeping pace with them on the depth chart, but the argument could be made that he’s actually ahead of them in terms of development.

Get excited, Flames fans. This kid appears to have a very bright future ahead of him.
