New Universe show coming to new DJD Dance Centre in Calgary

Dec 19 2017, 11:27 am

Dancers at Calgary’s new DJD (Decidedly Jazz Danceworks) Dance Centre are celebrating its grand opening with a new live music and dance production, called New Universe.

The new show will showcase the whole DJD company of dancers and feature a score by New York jazz great William Parker, as well as a five-piece band led by Parker himself.

“I am so inspired by his music, his playing and his spirit, it is a huge gift and learning experience,” said Artistic Director and choreographer of New Universe, Kimberley Cooper. “This is a magical time in DJD’s history. It’s amazing to be a part of it.”

The new $26-million dance centre opened earlier in May in the new award-winning Kahanoff II tower on 12th Avenue SE, in a space four times bigger its previous facility.

The first two performances of New Universe are gala fundraising evenings celebrating the centre’s opening, with a pre-show reception and a post-show chance to meet the cast.

Regular performances of New Universe continue after the Gala weekend until closing night on June 12.
