5 date nights in Calgary under $50

Jun 2 2016, 7:25 am

Date night doesn’t have to cost as much as your college textbooks – and I’m not even saying that because I’m broke 73% of the time. If you’re looking for ways to keep the love flowin’ and the cash growin’, look no further;  here are five date ideas to show your date a great time for under $50.

Movie night for half the price

Movie night can get so expensive, and when you add up tickets, popcorn, drinks, and candy, it can feel like you’re better off staying at home on the couch. Landmark Cinemas’ Movie Twosome promotion gets you two movie tickets, two medium drinks, one large popcorn (free refill), and a bag of candy all for one low price.

Where: Both Landmark Cinemas Calgary locations (Country Hills and Shawnessy)
When: Every Wednesday
Cost: $29.99 for everything

Go-karting

If you think go-karting is just for kids, think again. Unlike most go-kart venues, Shakers Fun Centre doesn’t have a posted weight limit – perfect for adults. The track is simple to navigate, the karts are easy to use, and the experience is exhilarating, especially when you pass your date around a corner and yell “eat my shorts, sucker!”

Where:  Shakers Fun Centre – 9900 Venture Avenue SE
When: Wednesday to Sunday
How Much: $7.99 per five to seven minute session. Expect to buy at least two sessions each.

Mini golf and driving range combo

Whether you have tons of golfing experience, or none at all, this date offers laughter, friendly competition, and the occasional romantic movie moment – that one where you stand behind your date, put your arms around them, and teach them how to swing the club. And when you’re all warmed up, head over to the mini-golf course and see who can get a hole-in-one.

Where: Harvest Hills Golf Centre – 999 Country Hills Boulevard NE
When: 9 am to 9 pm, seven days a week
Cost: $10/adult for mini golf, $13/bucket of 100 golf balls for the driving range, $3/golf club rental

Board game cafe

Sitting at home with a board game is a great way to spend an evening, but what do you do when you get hungry or thirsty? Pause the game and risk losing your Monopoly master mindset?! No way. We are lucky enough to have multiple board game cafes in Calgary to choose from. They’re all special and different in their own way, but all offer the same thing: hundreds of board games to play and a menu for food and drinks! Whether you’re married to your date, or you’re going out with them for the first time, nothing teaches you more about a person than how they play a board game.

Where: Pips Board Game CaféMetal Galaxy Social Games + Bistro, and Boxcar Board Game Café
When: Operating hours vary by venue
Cost: Prices under $5 depending on the day, time, and venue

Pack a picnic

This is the ultimate date idea for those times when the wallet’s deflated, but the heart is not. There are so many wonderful places around Calgary that provide great trails, beautiful views, and ample flat space to lay down a blanket. A few good places to try are: Nose Hill, Fish Creek Park, Edworthy Park and Bowness Park, but don’t be afraid to walk along the Bow River until you find a space that feels right. Or flat. And if you’re not sure what to pack, you can go as simple or as complicated as you wish.

Where: Multiple places around the city
When: Picnics are great for any meal of the day, including dessert
Cost: Pack a picnic from home for cheap or splurge on some fancy finger foods and a bottle of wine
