There's a 'clothing-optional' wave pool swim in Calgary this July

One of Calgary’s wave pools will be seeing more skin than usual this summer.

Calgary Nude Recreation, a YYC group that “was established in the belief that contextually-appropriate social nudity can be a powerful tool for individuals to gain confidence, free themselves from body-shame, and allow a new connection with the self and others,” is hosting a clothing-optional wave pool swim this July.

The event will only be available to members of the group or guests of members, though Calgarians can join the organization by applying online and paying the $10 annual membership fee.

The wave pool swim is set to be held on Sunday, July 7, and even includes a “Stampede Special” wherein a member and a guest will be able to get in for just $30 total — tickets are regular $20 for members and $25 for guests.

The facility chosen will include water slides, a wave pool, a hot tub, a sauna, and a rope swing, though the specific venue location and time of the event will only be released to members.

Government-issued identification is needed for both registering as a member and at check-in for the event.

Calgary Nude Recreation has also included a dress code for the clothing-optional swim, stating that “clothing optional events are to empower people to make the choice on what’s best for themselves.”

There is no obligation to get naked or stay naked, the event states, though it should be understood that most attendees will be nude and that anyone who has joined the group for the wrong reasons will be asked to leave.

“For our 20th event, we decided to have a bit of fun with the theme and offer members the chance to bring a pre-registered guest for only $10 extra. Social nudity is on the rise across the world, and we love giving Calgarians the chance to participate right here at home,” a representative from Calgary Nude Recreation stated to Daily Hive in an email.

“Negative body image permeates our culture. Calgary Nude Recreation strives to counter this by promoting body-positive values. We believe people have a right to present themselves without shame and to be respected regardless of what they are or aren’t wearing.”

Phones — or anything else that has the ability to take photos — must be kept out of the event space, and it is not appropriate for anyone to comment on the amount of clothing worn or not work by other attendees, the website states.

Calgary Nude Recreation also provided the following statement for anyone who may be nervous about attending a clothing-optional event:

Feeling comfortable being naked around non-sexual partners goes against pretty much everything our culture teaches us since we were young. It’s normal to feel nervous at first, but please know that will soon pass.  Keep in mind most people truly enjoy their first experience, even if its a bit difficult to work up the courage initially.  Facing and defeating fears can be a wonderful feeling and accomplishment. Unfortunately, that can’t be accomplished while living safely inside of your comfort zone. This group was created for people like you to experience social nudity, to see the respectful and non-judgmental nature of it, and finally take the plunge yourself should you choose.
