6 City of Calgary projects that are changing the look of the city

Calgary is constantly evolving, and with that comes some pretty amazing projects. The city’s skyline, streets, and public spaces are being reimagined through redevelopments and new builds, changing the city one project at a time.
From street revamps to major transformations, here are six City of Calgary projects that are transforming the city’s look.
Stephen Avenue Revitalization

Stephen Avenue, one of downtown’s most recognizable streets, is getting a makeover. The city is working on upgrading everything from water pipes to street surfaces. The new design will give Calgarians a place to gather and spend more time in the downtown core.
According to the website, “Refreshing Stephen Avenue is a big part of The City’s plan to make downtown a better place for everyone. It supports Calgary’s goals to build a strong, people-friendly, and successful downtown.”
Estimated completion: Summer 2026
Olympic Plaza Transformation

The iconic Olympic Plaza is undergoing a major redesign. The new plaza will celebrate the legacy of the original while providing Calgarians with a new, innovative, flexible, and active space to enjoy. The plaza will be able to accommodate over 5,000 people and feature a water fountain and splash pad in the summer, as well as an ice skating rink in the winter.
Estimated completion: 2028
Scotia Place

City of Calgary
Calgary’s skyline and entertainment district are getting a big upgrade. The aging Saddledome is being replaced by a brand-new 1.12-million-square-foot entertainment venue. Located in Victoria Park, the new arena will be home to the Calgary Flames and feature restaurants, gathering spaces, and public plazas. It will host everything from NHL games to major concerts and festivals.
Estimated completion: Summer 2027
Marda Loop Main Street

Marda Loop’s streets underwent a ton of renovation over the last couple of years, and for good reason. The area is one of Calgary’s busiest and most beloved neighbourhoods, and the upgrade aims to make it even more welcoming. The project was focused on prioritizing pedestrian experience, enhancing landscaping, and creating unique elements to set Marda Loop apart from the city.Â

Arts Commons Transformation

City of Calgary
Calgary’s premier performing arts centre is going through a massive transformation. The project includes the expansion and modernization of the building, meeting the demand for a flexible and accessible arts and performance venue. The transformation is being tackled in two phases: the expansion phase, which includes the development of a three-level building that features a new 1,000-seat theatre, and the modernization phase, which will renovate the existing Arts Commons building.
Estimated completion: 2028/2029
Belmont Fieldhouse and Library

City of Calgary
The City of Calgary announced the start of construction on the Belmont Fieldhouse and library earlier this year. The estimated cost of the project is $71.8 million. It will be about 118,000 sq. ft. and feature an artificial turf field for a range of sports, viewing areas, dressing rooms, washroom facilities, as well as public meeting rooms, open seating areas, and a children’s area in the library.
