Canadiens' defender Matheson scores unbelievable end-to-end goal

Montreal Canadiens defenceman Mike Matheson might’ve just scored the goal he’ll tell his grandchildren about one day.

Matheson isn’t exactly known for his goal-scoring ability, but he showed off the moves on Tuesday night with a third-period marker against the New Jersey Devils.

Picking up the puck in his own end on a Canadiens’ power play midway through the third period, Matheson broke through his own defensive zone before looking to pass to one of his teammates. Montreal had pulled goaltender Cayden Primeau, so Matheson had a possible extra outlet to make a pass to.

But with no obvious lane open, Matheson decided to do things himself, taking the puck right up the middle of the ice.

Moments later, his sudden burst of speed seemed to shock all four Devils on the ice, and all of a sudden it was a one-on-one between Matheson and New Jersey goalie Vitek Vanecek.

It was the first goal of the season for Matheson and the 58th of his NHL career.

An alternate angle from the crowd showed just how impressive Matheson’s solo effort was:

Unfortunately for the Canadiens, the cool moment was just that, as they were trailing 4-2 after Matheson’s marker and fell 5-2 on the evening.

“We didn’t quit, we fought, so to me, that’s a really good habit, because if you quit, you guarantee one thing, you’re not going to get what you want,” Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis said postgame.

“If you don’t quit, you keep pushing, you don’t guarantee that you’re going to get what you want. But if you quit, you guarantee that you’re not going to get what you want. So, I’m happy about that.”

With the loss, Montreal fell to 3-2-1 on the season, as they currently sit in fifth place in the NHL’s Atlantic Division. They’re back in action tomorrow night, when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Bell Centre for a 7 pm ET puck drop.
