Canada/US border closure will remain in place for another month: Trudeau

Canada and the United States agreed to extend the border closure for another month.

According to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the extension will be in place until August 21.

“Once again, Canada and the United States have agreed to extend the current border measures by one month until August 21, and we’re going to keep working closely with our American neighbours to keep people safe on both sides of the border,” Trudeau confirmed on Thursday.

Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Chad Wolf also echoed the news on Thursday.

“Based on the success of the existing restrictions and close collaboration with Mexico and Canada, @DHSgov will continue to limit non-essential travel at our land ports of entery with Canada and Mexico until August 20,” he tweeted.

On Monday, Trudeau said he and his US counterpart “pledged to continue to monitor closely the situation.”

The situation, he said, is one that is “rapidly evolving, and therefore we need to keep responding to the situation on the ground.”

In March, all non-essential travel was closed along the border. However, trucking and trade were not affected, as maintaining commerce between the two countries was deemed essential for Canada’s economic recovery.

At the time, Trudeau said the border would be closed for as long as it needs to be.
