Canada blanks Slovakia 5-0 at World Hockey Championships (HIGHLIGHTS)

Canada remains unbeaten at the World Hockey Championships after another dominating win this morning. The team defeated Slovakia 5-0, which coincidentally improved their record to 5-0 in the tournament.

Five different players scored for Canada and Cam Talbot made 18 saves for his second shutout of the tournament.

“It’s easy to play behind a team like this,” said Talbot. “We don’t give them a lot of time with the puck so I know that if I can just make the first stop and try and control the rebound the guys are gonna clear those out for me.”

Talbot now has two shutouts in the tournament, and leads all goalies with a .960 SV%. He’s been sharp despite going long stretches without seeing action.

“Sometimes it’s harder to stay focused and stay in the game,” Talbot admitted. “Later on in the tournament that might not be the case, so I’ll take some rest where I get it and hopefully keep improving as the tournament goes on.”

Morgan Rielly, Matt Duchene, Taylor Hall, Mark Scheifele, and Derrick Brassard got the goals for Canada, and Mark Stone had a pair of assists in the win. Canada now has 30 goals in five games this tournament.

“When we’re playing the right way we’re going to score and create chances,” said Scheifele. “It was a big game for us and now we’ll move on to the next one and continue to move forward.”

Bolstering the blue line

Canada also announced this morning that they’ll be adding Nashville Predators defenceman Ryan Ellis to the roster for the rest of the tournament.

“We had the opportunity to add one more experienced, puck-moving defenceman,” said co-GM George McPhee. “Ryan is very familiar with these players and has had a lot of success with them internationally; he will be a great fit with this group.”

Ellis will join Canada for their next game against France on Monday at 7:15 a.m.
