Canada Post says it has cleared all holiday backlog

Canada Post workers were recently federally legislated back to work after a rotating strike, and now the company says it has cleared up the delivery backlog that came along with those strikes

Well, except for Vancouver.

In a statement, Canada Post said that while “uneven backlogs continue to pose a challenge, we are processing and delivering mail and parcels across the country and have taken every extra effort to get caught up as quickly as possible.”

For the most part, the company said it is “now in a position to restore normal holiday delivery service guarantees for much of the country,” essentially meaning Canadians can expect normal holiday delivery timelines for parcels.

The exception to this though still remains for items headed to or departing Vancouver “as backlogs there continue to cause additional delays,” the company said.

The back-to-work legislation was a last resort after the government spent over a year trying to see Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) reach a new collective bargaining agreement.

Since October, CUPW members had been holding rotating walkouts in an effort to force Canada Post to agree to their contract demands, causing massive backlogs at postal depots across the county.

Earlier this month, a Canada Post spokesperson John Hamilton said at its height the backlog totalled six million packages across the country.
