Canada Post employee who tested positive for COVID-19 at Mississauga facility dies

A Canada Post employee died over the weekend after testing positive for COVID-19 at a Mississauga facility that had declared an outbreak.

In a statement by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), they were informed on Tuesday morning of the employee’s passing.

“We have many questions for Canada Post and we are demanding answers.”

While the cause if death is unknown, CUPW said they do know the member had recently tested positive for COVID-19 and had worked at the Gateway East facility, where an outbreak, which has now infected 224 people, was declared earlier this month.

“Postal workers have been on the front lines since the beginning of the pandemic, making sure society can function. They are worried and tired, and right now, demand answers from Canada Post and Public Health authorities. The health and safety of our members is not negotiable. We must do everything we can to keep them safe. Nothing less is acceptable,” the statement added.

The cases at the facility have been recorded since January 1.
