Despite the lopsided score, the game was close after the first 20 minutes, with Canada only holding a 2-1 lead.

“First period, they came out hot,” said defenceman Matt Dumba. “They were getting pucks on us, and played a good game. I guess it caught us a little off-guard, but we knew what we had to do and in the second period, we showed it.”

This was only Canada’s second time ever playing Hungary at the World Championships, the only other time coming in 2009.

“There is kind of a little mystery behind [playing against a team you don’t know well],” Dumba said. “You’re usually preparing for games and know who you’re going against and all their tendencies, so that might have contributed to our slow start. But we finished hard and played the way we wanted to.”

Canada took full control of the game with four goals in the second period to take a 6-1 lead, before Taylor Hall added a seventh in the third.

“[Our team] has a lot of speed, a lot of skill, and guys are motivated,” said captain Corey Perry, who scored the game winner just ten minutes in.

Michael Matheson led all Canadian players with a goal and two assists in the game. Calvin Pickard stopped 21 of 22 shots, only missing on the top shelf blast by Istvan Bartalis.

Team Canada will look to improve to 3-0 on Monday, taking on Belarus at 6:15 a.m.
