Canada beats Germany 5-2 at World Hockey Championships (HIGHLIGHTS)

Canada had their first bit of adversity today at the World Hockey Championships, before eventually edging Germany by a score of 5-2.

After jumping ahead 2-0 early in the second period on goals from Taylor Hall and Corey Perry, you might have thought that Canada was going to cruise to victory against a world hockey minnow. But the Germans had other ideas.

Patrick Reimer and Sinan Akdag both scored for Germany in the second half of the second period to tie the game at two heading into the third.

Canada showed off their depth and quality in the third though, getting goals from Taylor Hall (his second of the game), Boone Jenner, and Cody Ceci to put the game out of reach.

“There wasn’t panic, but we knew we had to have our best period of the tournament,” Hall said after the game. “[Germany] played hard tonight. They came out strong and you gotta give them credit. I think we did a lot to feed their transition and feed their play. So if we can be better that way – just better starts – that will help us a lot.”

Derrick Brassard picked up two assists in the game and now leads Team Canada with 7 points (2-5-7).

Canada has now won 14 straight games at the Worlds, which includes a gold medal at last year’s tournament.

With the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs coming to an end tonight, some teams are bolstering their rosters with NHL talent. The Washington Capitals were eliminated on Tuesday, allowing Team Russia to add Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Dmitry Orlov. Will Canada follow suit?

“I am perfectly fine with the team we have,” Canadian head coach Bill Peters said. “If we can add someone that can make us better, we will have to consider it.”

Canada’s next game is on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Slovakia.
