The federal government has announced that it will be creating more paid work placements for post-secondary students.

The plan aims to create 60,000 student work placements over the next five years.

The Government’s Student Work-Integrated Learning Program will invest $73 million to create 10,000 paid student work placements over the next four years.

An additional $221 million will be allocated as funding for Mitacs, a national research organization that manages and funds research and training programs for post-secondary students. Mitacs aims to create over 10,000 work placements per year over the next five years.

The focus of these positions will be in the science and tech industries. Federal Minister of Science Kristy Duncan said that the government will be working closely with MaRS Discovery District (MaRS), a Toronto based non-profit that aims to commercialize publicly funded medical research and other technologies.

“This program will help build stronger partnerships between government, post-secondary institutions and employers and will help young Canadians gain the experience they need to succeed to become innovative leaders in our modern, fast-paced economy,” said Duncan, in a statement.

Over 400 positions will be designated to STEM students, newcomers, and Indigenous students.
