Calgary has seen some pretty rainy weather recently, and it can be a bit of a downer. Luckily, there are a ton of fun things to do around Calgary on a rainy day.

From thought-provoking exhibits to inside activities that will get your heart pumping, there’s no shortage of things to keep you busy and get your mind off the rain.

Here are seven things to do on a rainy day in the city.

Wander through a museum

Whether you’re a fan of art, history, or quirky science facts, there’s hardly a better way to keep your mind busy than at one of Calgary’s museums!

Check out the Esker Foundation in Inglewood for free art exhibits, Telus Spark Science Centre for jaw-dropping displays, Studio Bell for some music history, or the Military Museums, Gasoline Alley Museum, and the Hangar Flight Museum for a look into the past.

Hit up an (indoor) park

You can still be around nature without getting wet. The Devonian Gardens are located on the top floor of the Core Shopping Centre in downtown Calgary, and it’s a veritable oasis no matter the weather outside. You can enjoy ample seating, the food court, and even a playground for the kiddos.

Try a new activity

If something a little more active appeals, then Calgary has you covered. Your regular gym might be all well and good, but if you want to get a few friends together, there are more exciting things to try.

Hit up Calgary’s only indoor beach volleyball court at The Beach YYC, or scale new heights at the Calgary Climbing Centre. You can even jump for joy to your heart’s content at the Flying Squirrel trampoline park. There are two locations in Calgary, and before you ask, yes, adults are allowed.

Catch a movie

Of course, you can’t go wrong with catching a movie! There are tons of great movies to check out right now. From the new Minions movie to the hit horror film Obsession, there is something for everyone.

Check out your closest Cineplex or Landmark theatre for the daily showtimes and go enjoy some popcorn!

Watch a comedy show

Have a good laugh at one of Calgary’s many comedy venues. What could be better than a few drinks and live entertainment when the weather is looking miserable?

Yuk Yuk’s and Comedy Cave have regular shows throughout the month. There are also several local shows. Check out Sunday night stand-up at the Attic Bar and Stage hosted by local drag queens Victoria Banner and Karla Marx.

Stop by a board game cafe

No need to rein in your competitive side when you’re at a board game cafe. Round up a few friends and replay old favourites or discover brand-new games you’ve never heard of before.

Hexagon in Kensington is a beloved haunt for games, coffee, and community. You can also opt for one of their cocktails if it’s too late in the day for caffeine.

Test your wits at an escape room

If solving puzzles to get you and your friends out of a locked room doesn’t give you claustrophobia, then an escape room might be just what the doctor ordered.

Test your skills — and your friendships — at a local escape room in Calgary. Some local favourites include Escape60 downtown, which includes a bar, Trapped Escape Room, and Escape Hour. We hope you make it!

What did we tell you? There are plenty of things to do on a rainy day in Calgary.

Have fun and stay dry out there.
