Inglewood is at risk of losing a 103-year-old historic building with a neat past

Inglewood may lose a building that has been around for over a century as it makes way for a brand-new multi-story development.

During a June 23 city council meeting, councillors approved a land use amendment that allows the redevelopment of 1336 and 1340 9th Ave. SE in a 14-0 vote.

According to a City of Calgary development permit, the site will be redeveloped into a six-storey mixed-use building containing 65 residential units, one commercial unit, and underground parking.

The building set to be removed is located at 1340 9th Ave. SE. It was constructed in 1923, and now serves the neighbourhood as Inglewood Food Mart & Video. It is also known as Blyth Block.

According to the City of Calgary, the building is a rare example of an inter-war commercial building on Inglewood’s main street, as well as a prime example of the Spanish Colonial Revival Style in the community of Inglewood.

During its more than 100-year history, the building has operated as a dance hall, confectionery, and has housed many local businesses over the decades.

Design and Architecture Studio (DAAS) is listed as the applicant on the development permit for the project. The proposal also includes the redevelopment of Carson Block, the two-storey building next to Blyth Block.

Unlike Blyth Block, Carson Block will be incorporated into the new development. Constructed in 1912, Carson Block is an integral component of the retail and commercial activity that made 9th Avenue SE one of Calgary’s most popular streets. Today, it is home to the Dirty Duck Pub as well as some residential units.

The development permit is currently under review by the City of Calgary.
