Calgary Flames make big sports radio announcement
The Calgary Flames have found a new home in order to continue with radio broadcasts for each and every one of their games.
The Flames took to social media on Wednesday morning to announce that they’ve agreed to a five-year partnership with Corus Entertainment, perhaps better known to Calgarians as QR 770.
“We’re excited to share this news with our fans and, most importantly, to let them know we heard them loud and clear as we now have a new home for the future of Calgary Flames radio broadcasts,” said Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation president and CEO Robert Hayes.
“Corus has stepped up as a tremendous partner, working closely with us over recent weeks to ensure Flames games remain accessible to our fans throughout the season. Their commitment and collaboration have been invaluable in preserving an important connection with the C of Red, whether they’re listening at home, in their vehicles or wherever the game may take them.”
This is incredible news for Flames fans, who were very disappointed to learn just over a month ago that Sportsnet 960 had been abruptly pulled off the airwaves.
On top of Flames games being broadcast at QR 770, the station has also announced that a new show, Flames Now, will be added to its programming. It will be a daily sports talk show aimed at providing fans with the latest Flames news and much more.
“We are thrilled to welcome the Calgary Flames back home – as the station that broadcast the Stanley Cup-winning team’s games in 1989, this is an incredibly special time for QR Calgary 770AM,” said Corus Entertainment Vice President Tammy Cole.
“This partnership represents a full circle moment, and we’re proud to build on our shared history while creating a new chapter for fans as they continue to follow and support their team for years to come.”
There will also be further updates to come regarding an on-air team as well as additional programming. Sportsnet’s Eric Francis tweeted out on Wednesday that the daily sports talk show will be hosted by a “very familiar and popular name” which has led many to speculate that it will be Pat Steinberg.
As I hinted at, the Flames have signed a five-year deal with news/talk radio station QR77 to broadcast all Flames games on the AM dial.
It will include a few hours of sports talk every afternoon, to be hosted by a very familiar and popular name.

Steinberg was the longtime host of Flames Talk, which was a staple amongst hockey fans throughout Calgary. He had also hosted all Flames postgame shows for several years at Sportsnet 960.
What this winds up looking like compared to Sportsnet 960 remains to be seen, but sports fans in Calgary can now celebrate knowing that sports radio will continue on in Cowtown.
