This is what Calgary looked like exactly one year ago (PHOTOS)

Calgarians should be thanking Mother Nature for the mild fall weather we’ve been seeing, because last September saw some serious snowfall.

A total of 24.6 cm of snow fell on September 29, 2019 alone, marking the snowiest September day that the city had seen since records began in 1881.

According to Environment Canada, that day a year ago broke the 124-year-old record that had been held by September 19, 1895, when 22.9 cm of snow fell, and September 28, 1925’s now-third place record of 19.8 cm.

Snow in Calgary during September isn’t all that ordinary — even in a city that is known for its weird weather.

According to weatherstats.ca, YYC has only experienced snow on the ground once in the past decade. Though when it did hit, it hit hard.

September 2014 was the last time snow was seen on the ground in Calgary, accumulating to a total of 10 cm before melting away in the snowless October that followed.

In total, there have been only seven instances of September snow on the ground in Calgary over 40 years, meaning that while last year’s weather may not have been entirely out of left field, it was definitely one for the history books.
