A new poll just revealed which cities Canadians think are the safest in the country, and Calgary is looking pretty good.
The poll, conducted by Liaison Strategies, asked 1,500 Canadian adults to rate the safety of 15 Canadian cities, based on whether they consider each city very safe, somewhat safe, somewhat unsafe, or very unsafe.
Calgary came in eighth place with a +24 net safety score.

That score is based on the share of respondents who consider the city safe minus the share who consider it unsafe. Overall, 59 per cent of respondents said Calgary is very or somewhat safe, while 35 per cent said it is somewhat or very unsafe.
The study found that crime statistics aren’t the biggest factor when it comes to how Canadians view a city’s safety. News coverage was the top factor at 28 per cent, followed by personal experience at 23 per cent, while just 12 per cent pointed to crime statistics.

Calgary’s score has improved since the last time the study was conducted in 2017, when it had a net safety score of +16.
Calgary saw the third-highest gain on the list, jumping eight points from 2017. On the other hand, Edmonton recorded the largest decline, dropping 32 points from its 2017 score to -8.

The city also came out ahead of Edmonton when looking at how Albertans view safety. Among Alberta respondents, Calgary had a net safety score of +42, while Edmonton’s score was -14.
Quebec City took the top spot with a +57 net safety score, followed closely by Ottawa at +56 and Charlottetown at +51.
On the other end of the scale, Winnipeg came in as the most unsafe city with a score of -28, followed by Toronto, which had a net safety score of -18.

This isn’t the only national ranking Calgary has fared well on recently. According to the 2026 Leger Happiness Index, YYC is among one of the happiest cities in the country.
