Calgary Public Library unveils plans for eight new locations by 2040

The Calgary Public Library (CPL) is planning a major expansion, with eight new and three redeveloped locations planned across the city by 2040.
CPL recently released its 2027 to 2030 strategic plan and a new facility master plan, which outlines how the library system could grow from 22 locations today to 30 over the next 14 years.
The plans include new libraries in Belmont, Walden, Symons Valley, Skyview Ranch, West District, Tuxedo Park, Keystone, and Belvedere.
Three existing locations are also included in the plan for redevelopment or replacement: North Hill, Southwood, and Forest Lawn.
The expansion would add at least 200,000 sq. ft. of library space across Calgary, with the goal of meeting a North American benchmark of 0.3 sq. ft. of community space per capita by 2040.
The plan also aims to increase active library memberships to three out of every four Calgarians by 2040, up from about half today.

“In an era of complexity and polarization, libraries represent a rare public space where everyone is welcome, and we can challenge each other, respectfully, to broaden our thinking, and build a better tomorrow, through stories,” said Sarah Meilleur, the CEO of CPL, in a release.
“We have 22 locations today, and if we achieve our vision, we’ll grow to 30 locations by 2040. We are excited to collaborate with community as we build the library and the future of our city together.”
In addition to the expansion plans, CPL outlined several long-term goals for its services, including increasing annual visits to nearly 18 million by 2040, up from seven million in 2025.
The library also aims to bring their total circulation to nearly 30 million items annually, compared with 17.5 million in 2025, while expanding its collections and offering more opportunities for learning, creativity, and digital literacy.
