Photo radar approved to come back to these areas in Calgary soon

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) has received approval from the provincial government for photo radar to come back in some parts of the city after concerns were raised by local law enforcement.
Since April 1 of this year, photo radar was only permitted around schools, playgrounds, and construction zones.
Law enforcement agencies are permitted to submit a business case exemption request to the provincial government to reinstate the use of automated traffic enforcement (ATE) at high-risk areas for serious-injury or fatal collisions.
As of Friday, Oct. 3, 2025, Intersection Safety Devices (ISD) for red-light and speed enforcement will return to the following intersections:
- Eastbound and westbound 16th Avenue at 68th Street NE
- East and westbound Highway 1A at 12th Mile Coulee Road NW
There were 37 collisions at 16th Avenue and 68th Street last year, and the highest recorded speeds were between 111 km/h and 192 km/h in the 70 km/h zone
Highway 1A and 12th Mile Coulee Road NW saw 20 collisions in 2024, and the highest recorded speeds were between 121 km/h and 162 km/h in the 90 km/h zone.
āWe thank the provincial government for approving the use of automated traffic enforcement at these locations. They have proven to be dangerous intersections, and we know that implementing this change will make a positive difference for the safety of the community,ā said Deputy Chief Cliff OāBrien of the Calgary Police Service in a release.Ā
In December 2024, mandatory restrictions led to the removal of Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) on all provincial highways and limited use of ISDs for red-light enforcement only on provincial roads and connectors.
āAutomated traffic enforcement has historically played a vital role in the Serviceās overall traffic safety enforcement, and we know that speed is a major factor in the severity of collisions.”
