Calgary is a great city for many reasons, and as someone who grew up in rural British Columbia, many things drew me to the big city life.
After living here for two years, I can confidently say there are a few things that I didn’t expect to enjoy so much about Calgary.
From the charming neighbourhoods to the amazing food scene, here are eight things I didn’t realize I would love so much as a B.C. transplant.
The Prairies

While not necessarily in the city, the prairie landscapes never fail to mesmerize me. Wide open skies, rolling fields, and views that stretch as far as the eye can see are something I will never get over. The sense of open space is unmatched, the sunsets are incredible, and the horizon just feels endless.Ā
Close to the Rockies

Before coming to Calgary, I had heard the famous saying, āThe mountains are right in our backyard.ā I had no idea how true it was. Seeing the mountain peaks from the heart of the city is breathtakingly unexpected, plus it’s only about an hour and a half drive to immerse yourself right in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Neighbourhoods feel like their own cities

Calgary has over 200 neighbourhoods, and somehow, they all manage to have different vibes and personalities. Some have busy streets full of shops, cafes, and public art around every corner, and others are quiet, suburban roads with tree-lined streets, parks, and a great sense of community. Exploring each area feels like stepping into a new mini-city with its own character.Ā
Outdoor lifestyle

When moving to a big city from a small rural town, I was fully expecting concrete jungle vibes, but Calgary is a surprisingly outdoorsy place. From river walks along the Bow River to parks perfect for picnics, activities, or just a quiet moment in nature, there is really no shortage of ways to enjoy the outdoors while living in the city.Ā
The food scene
Coming from a town with a total of maybe 20 places to eat, it’s safe to say that Calgary’s food scene has me infatuated. The city has literally everything, from trendy brunch spots to fine dining I didn’t even know existed.

Farmers markets and local food events make it easy to find fresh and local ingredients, and there’s always something new to try. Even after two years here, Iām still discovering hidden gems around every corner.
Sporting events

In rural British Columbia, a big sports event is going down to the hockey arena and cheering on the local Junior B hockey team. Calgary takes sports to a whole other level. From getting caught up in the rush of a Stampeders game to feeling the passion in the C of Red at a Flames game, it’s not just about the games themselves; it’s about the energy, community, and excitement that can be felt throughout the city.Ā
Live music is everywhere
As an avid live music fan, Iāve found Calgaryās music scene absolutely amazing. From world tours and concerts at the Saddledome to buskers on Stephen Avenue, there’s always something happening.

Ā You can catch everything from local bands and singers at bars, concerts at small venues, or outdoor shows in one of the many parks. Festivals and open mic nights keep the scene fresh, and thereās so much variety from country singers to DJs. No matter your taste, Calgary makes it easy to find live music wherever you go.
There is ALWAYS something to do

One thing about Calgary is that there is never a dull moment. Whether it’s checking out a festival, wandering a local market, or going to a pop-up event, there is literally always something going on. No matter what your interests are, the city makes it easy to fill your time with something fun to do inside, outside, day or night.
