Calgary coffee roaster named best in Canada at prestigious competition

A Calgary coffee roaster is earning international recognition after winning Canada’s top title at the 2026 Global Coffee Awards, along with five other awards.
Phil & Sebastian was named the national winner for Canada at the 2026 Global Coffee Awards for the U.S. and Canada after competing against roasteries from across North America.
The competition took place in Houston, Texas, on Aug. 10 and 11, with coffees evaluated through a double-blind tasting process by an independent panel of coffee professionals.
The Calgary-based roaster received six recognitions across espresso, filter, and milk-based coffee categories, including a gold medal for its Candy Cloud Espresso in the Single Origin Experimental category.

The company’s other results included three silver medals, a bronze medal, and a finalist placement.
Phil & Sebastian co-founder Phil Robertson said the results reflect the work that goes into sourcing and roasting coffee, as well as the importance of judging it on its quality alone.
“One of the things I lament about the coffee industry is how much a coffee roaster’s reputation can shape the perception of their quality,” Robertson said. “I’m excited about competitions like the Global Coffee Awards because they allow us, as coffee roasters, to be evaluated more objectively, decoupled from our reputation and popularity, and based solely on the quality of the coffee itself.”
Founded in 2007, Phil & Sebastian currently has nine locations across Calgary, including one in Seton that opened earlier this year.
