Calgary Performing Arts Festival 2016 begins at Mount Royal

The Calgary Performing Arts Festival begins on Monday, April 18, bringing the best of amateur performance to Mount Royal University.

Throughout the festival, which continues through May 7, some 10,000 young performers will be competing for thousands of dollars in scholarships.

Amongst a myriad of other performances, the festival is offering:

  • Musical Theatre Showcase on April 30 – the most outstanding students will perform selections from the newest shows as well as all-time favourite Broadway classics.
  • European Masters on May 3 – stellar performances of works of the grand masters of classical music including Mozart, Chopin, Schumann and Grieg.
  • Outstanding Speech Performers Showcase on May 6 – promising young speech and drama performers bring the world’s great classics and exciting new works to the stage.

The winners of the prestigious Rose Bowl and Rose Bowl Scholarships will be announced at the end of the Stars of the Festival Concert on May 7.

The festival is one of the largest amateur competitive festivals in North America and has been running for 85 years. It was formerly known as the Kiwanis Festival.
