Winter in Calgary can be harsh, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay cooped up inside. The city has plenty of parks that are perfect for getting outside and exploring the city, even when it’s cold.

From parks with tobogganing hills and skating rinks to places with stunning views and snowy trails, here are six Calgary parks that are worth braving the cold.

Bowness Park

When the weather gets cold, Bowness Park turns into a winter wonderland. For those looking to keep active, you can find free ice skating on the lagoon, cross-country skiing, crokicurl, ice bikes, and an ice trail that loops through the park. It also offers scenic views of the Bow River surrounded by ice and snow.

Prince’s Island ParkĀ 

Prince’s Island Park is a quiet escape located right in the heart of downtown. Snow-dusted pathways, quiet riverside views, and plenty of opportunities for birdwatching make it the perfect place for a peaceful, cold-weather stroll. It’s also a great spot for photo ops with the city skyline and the nearby Peace Bridge.

North Glenmore Park

North Glenmore Park offers wide open views of the frozen reservoir, making it the perfect location for a walk on a cold, sunny day. The park is full of pathways for casual strolls or longer loops for those wanting to get their steps in. There are also ice trails, cross-country skiing paths, and crokicurl. If you’re looking for a spot to unwind and take in some beautiful winter scenery, North Glenmore Park is the place to be.

Confederation Park

Confederation Park is a great spot for the whole family in the winter. It has a popular tobogganing hill, easy pathways for snowy walks, and plenty of open space to play in the snow. The park’s trees and bridges look especially stunning covered in snow and frost. You also find the Lions Festival of Lights from Nov. 23, 2025, to Jan. 8, 2026, in the park.

If you like skating, Prairie Winds Park has you covered. It has a massive skating rink located on the southwest side of the park that is complete with firepit areas. They also have a toboggan hill! In the winter, the trees are decorated with lights, turning it into a winter wonderland right in the city.Ā 

Bowmont Park

Bowmont Park is the perfect destination for nature lovers, especially in the winter. It offers some amazing cold-season views of the city skyline, the Bow River, the Winsport ski jumps, and even the Rocky Mountains. Its mix of forested areas, open meadows, and riverside pathways makes it a gorgeous place to take in the winter season.
