10 Calgary neighbourhoods we think are very underrated

Calgary is home to plenty of neighbourhoods, and while some of them, like Beltline, Kensington, and Inglewood, get all the hype, some of them are just good but super underrated.

From inner-city hidden gems to conveniently located communities, here are 10 Calgary neighbourhoods that we think are underrated.

Montgomery

Montgomery is often overshadowed by neighbouring Bowness, but it quietly offers some of the best access to green space in the city. With connections to river walks and Shouldice Park, and quick routes to the University of Calgary and Market Mall, it’s both peaceful and practical.

Ogden

Ogden is one of Calgary’s oldest neighbourhoods and combines history with city living. You can find quiet streets, character homes, and historic buildings, including one that was built in 1912 and served as a military hospital during the First World War. It sits right along the Bow River, providing easy access to walking and cycling paths.

Located just west of downtown, Sunalta offers inner-city living without the price tag of some of the more popular neighbourhoods. It offers easy CTrain access, connections to the Bow River, and a growing mix of businesses and cafes. It’s the perfect spot for people who want to be close to the action of the city, but not directly in it.

Lakeview

With quick access to the Glenmore Reservoir and North Glenmore Park, Lakeview offers plenty of outdoor options for runners, cyclists, paddleboarders, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. It’s close to a bunch of amenities and local shops, making it a practical spot for those who love the outdoors.

Sitting on the eastern edge of Calgary, Belvedere offers a quiet vibe, with surprisingly easy access to the city’s core. Right next door, there are tons of stores, making it easy to grab a coffee, run some errands, and do some shopping without going too far.

Cliff Bungalow

If you’re into historic homes and tree-lined streets, Cliff Bungalow is the place to be. With easy access to 17th Avenue SW, it offers the perfect mix of charm and convenience. There are a ton of local cafes and shops around the area, making it easy to enjoy city life on foot.

Lake Bonavista

Lake Bonavista seamlessly blends lakeside living with everyday city convenience. Residents can enjoy the neighbourhood’s iconic man-made lake, walking paths, and parks, all without leaving the neighbourhood. The lake offers two private beaches, swimming, and water sports in the summer. They also host a ton of events, giving the neighbourhood a very community-driven feel.

Located in north Calgary, Panorama Hills offers a mix of modern homes, parks, and plenty of local amenities. While it’s newer and less historic than some other neighbourhoods, it delivers convenience, green space, and community, making it a great space for city living and suburban perks.

McKenzie Towne

McKenzie Towne in southeast Calgary offers a charming, master-planned community filled with tree-lined streets, parks, and a bunch of shops, restaurants, and businesses. Its village-style layout makes it super convenient, and the area hosts a ton of community events, giving it a small-town feel right in the city.

Elbow Park

Elbow Park is a beautiful community perfect for walking around. It boasts tree-lined streets, historic character homes, stunning modern homes and easy access to walking paths and parks. It’s often overlooked for trendier neighbourhoods, but Elbow Park is truly a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
