Whether you’re a beginner looking to pick up a new skill or a seasoned learner wanting to sharpen a skill, there are courses for everyone.
The courses are interactive, instructor-led, and run for six weeks. Here are just a few of the free courses you can access at the Calgary Public Library.
Discover Sign Language

With this American Sign Language (ASL) course, you will learn how to finger spell the alphabet, sign colours, numbers, objects, and family members. You will also learn a wide range of everyday vocabulary that will allow you to engage in conversation with members of the Deaf community.
Beginning Writer’s Workshop
If you’ve been wanting to get into writing, there is no time like the present! This course will help you write your own creative piece. Like a true writing workshop, you will learn literary techniques, peer review a classmate’s work, and receive constructive criticism on your work.
Introduction to Artificial Intelligence

This course introduces you to various forms of artificial intelligence (AI) and how we interact with AI as consumers in applications like chatbots and recommendation engines. You’ll also learn about the AI development process and how AI will affect the workforce, as well as ethical factors in AI deployment.
Medical Terminology: A Word Association Approach
In this course, you’ll learn medical terminology by using graphics and study tips to learn definitions, root terms, and how words are used in the medical world. You will be provided with fun and unusual facts to help you remember the medical terminology in unique ways. You will have opportunities to see how medical terminology is used in the real world through case study assignments, and you will be provided with flashcards to help you study.

Drawing for the Absolute Beginner

If you’re looking to pick up a new skill this spring, this course is perfect for any aspiring artists. You’ll be able to gain a solid foundation and understanding of the basics of drawing. You’ll become intimately familiar with paper types, drawing styles, rendering techniques, and the basic principles of perspective, layout, design, lighting, volume, and space.
Blogging and Podcasting for Beginners

This course will teach you how to plan and create your very own blog and podcast. Using hands-on exercises, you will discover how to use free web tools like Blogger, WordPress, Audacity, and YouTube. The course covers fundamentals, software usage, how to record a professional-sounding audio podcast, file editing, and how to record a video podcast.
