Calgary Hitmen collecting Teddy Bears in brand new Teddy Bear Toss

Nov 20 2020, 10:34 pm

It may not look quite the same as usual, but the Calgary Hitmen Teddy Bear Toss will be going forward in 2020, regardless.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Hitmen have had to reshape the way they receive teddy bear donations.

Usually the Teddy Bear Toss would see thousands of stuffed animals thrown onto the ice of the Saddledome following the Hitmen’s first goal of the game, but given that public health measures have cancelled in-person attendance at professional sports games, organizers had to get a little creative.

“Even though we are unable to hold our traditional teddy bear toss game this December due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is still a tremendous need from Southern Alberta charities for stuffed toys this holiday season,ā€ said Hitmen Assistant Manager of Business Operations Rob Kerr, in the release.

ā€œThere is currently demand for over 18,000 bears but that number is expected to grow as we move closer to December.Ā  It is our hope the great citizens of Calgary and area will support this unique collection so we can once again help the many agencies that need our support.ā€

Don’t worry, though, because the new event still includes the tossing of teddy bears!

According to a release from The Hitmen, a new Teddy Bear Lane will be created this December allowing for participants to drive by the Saddledome to toss a teddy bear into an inflatable outdoor rink.

Those who donate will also be privy to music, a video screen, decorated trees, and a visit from Santa during the trip.

Teddy Bears can be purchased on site, as well as purchased online for $15, or you can always bring your own to donate.

Donations go towards 40 charitable organizations including The Salvation Army, Alberta Children’s Hospital, Wood’s Homes, and more.

The Teddy Bear Toss will take place from December 4 to 6, though Calgarians can donate online at any time.
