After plenty of speculation dating back to last season, the Calgary Flames have traded veteran forward Blake Coleman.
Coleman, along with defenceman Olli Maatta, has been traded to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for another blueliner in Jake Middleton and draft picks. Sportsnet 960’s Pat Steinberg is reporting that the Flames will receive a 2029 second-round pick, a 2027 third-round pick, and a 2028 fourth-round pick in the deal.

Coleman has spent the past five seasons with the Flames. In a combined 392 games over that span, the 34-year-old scored 99 goals and 199 points. He’s also served as an assistant captain over the past two seasons.
It had been reported earlier in the week that Coleman wasn’t generating a ton of trade interest, though that was largely due to the fact that many teams were wanting to see how free agency played out.
Now that things have settled, the Wild were able to pull the trigger on the two-way forward, who has one year remaining on his contract with a $4.9 million cap hit, 50 per cent of which will be retained by the Flames.
Maatta’s time with the Flames was much more brief. He was acquired at this year’s trade deadline as part of a package from the Utah Mammoth in a deal that saw MacKenzie Weegar head the other way. He scored two goals and 14 points in 21 games with the Flames.
As for Middleton, he is set to enter the second year of a four-year deal which carries a cap hit of $4.35 million. The left-shot defenceman logged 75 games for the Wild this past season, scoring two goals and 16 points while averaging 17:30 in ice time.
Middleton, who has logged 381 NHL games in his career, is a stay-at-home defenceman who is best used in a third-pairing role. He won’t wow anyone with his skill, but he provides a steady presence on the back end.
This trade continues to go with the rebuilding process in Calgary. They have now traded out four key veterans from their roster this year ā Rasmus Andersson, Nazem Kadri, Weegar, and Coleman ā while being able to add several draft picks and prospects in return.
