Don’t rule out the Calgary Flames getting involved in some trade action ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.
The Flames, against nearly all predictions, sit in a playoff spot through 61 games. That success has resulted in management completely ruling out trading any veterans with term, including Rasmus Andersson. That said, the book hasn’t been completely closed regarding a few pending UFAs.
The name most have discussed as of late is Dan Vladar. The 27-year-old hasn’t had the best of seasons but could be of use to a team needing to add some depth to their crease.
“I think there might be a team or two showing some interest in Vladar,” Elliotte Friedman said this morning on The Big Show with Rusic and Rose. He did, however, mention that he doesn’t believe an offer has been made that excites the Flames management to this point.
Another player who is receiving interest is Joel Hanley. Many criticized the Flames’ decision to keep the 32-year-old on the roster this season, but he’s quickly silenced those detractors with some strong play in recent months.
“I’ve actually heard Hanley is a guy they’ve been asked about quite a bit,” Friedman said.
Hanley would be an intriguing grab for many playoff-bound teams, as he carries a cap hit of just $787,500 and has proven this season that he can be an everyday player at the NHL level.
Craig Conroy and his management staff are hopeful of getting into the playoffs this season, meaning that they aren’t just going to hand away a player like Hanley for nothing. That said, if a team gets desperate and offers something of substance, it would be hard to turn down for a player they claimed off of waivers at this time last year.
Two of the other pending UFAs the Flames have on their current roster are Anthony Mantha and Justin Kirkland, both of whom are out for the remainder of the season due to injury. The only other pending UFA is Kevin Rooney, though it doesn’t appear that he’s generated any interest to this point.
